Victoria, Hong Kong, 23rd June, 1849-
On the receipt of Despatch 12107 of the 7th April, I duly communicated to Mr. Tarrant that your Lordship had been pleased to direct that his salary be paid up to the date of the abolition of his office. On the following day Mr Tarrant waited on me, and appeared to consider that he should receive his salary to the date of your Lordship's decision being made known to him, and stated that the question might be easily arranged by my appointing him to some office. I explained to him that he had been duly informed by Sir John Davis on the 2nd October 1846,
